Chronic respiratory tract infections refer to long standing infection affecting the airways including nose,throat,bronchi,lungs.

ALLERGIC RHINITIS

Allergic rhinitis is an inflammatory condition of the nasal passages caused by an  allergic reaction to triggers such as dust,pollen, smoke.

BRONCHITIS

Bronchitis is inflammation of the lining of bronchial tubes . The inflammation can be caused by any infection or other factors such as smoking, exposure to fumes from chemicals .

ASTHMA

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory condition in which bronchial tubes become hyper responsive ,narrow and produce excess mucus leading to difficulty in breathing .

SINUSITIS

Sinusitis is the inflammation of mucous membrane that lines the sinuses which leads to obstruction of mucous drainage leading to various symptoms.

NASAL POLYPS

Nasal polyps are painless, benign growths that develop in the mucosa lining the nasal passages and sinuses  .

In Ayurveda, such conditions are associated with Pranavaha Srotas Dushti involving imbalance of Kapha and Vata doshas, leading to excess mucus and obstruction of respiratory channels.Ayurveda treatment focuses on clearing accumulated kapha and boosting immunity.Therapies like Nasya karma , swedana is very helpful. And ayurveda formulations with proper lifestyle,diet . symptoms can be effectively controlled and recurrence reduced .

ALLERGIC RHINITIS

Allergic rhinitis is an inflammatory condition of the nasal passages caused by an  allergic reaction to triggers such as dust,pollen, smoke.

Symptoms:

  1. Frequent sneezing
  2. Nasal itching
  3. Watery eyes

In ayurveda Allergic rhinitis can be correlated to Pratishyaya ,primarily involving vata and kapha .In Ayurveda , panchakarma procedures are advised  priorly to balance tridosha and correct agni later Nasya karma which is instillation of medicated liquid .

Later Ayurveda oral medications to improve respiratory immunity.

BRONCHITIS

Bronchitis is inflammation of the lining of bronchial tubes . The inflammation can be caused by any infection or other factors such as smoking, exposure to fumes from chemicals .

Symptoms:

  1. Cough -dry or productive 
  2. Wheezing 
  3. Shortness of breath 
  4. Sore throat 

 Bronchitis is often correlated with Kasa due to imbalance of Vata and Kapha dosha. Treatment includes swedana and vamana in chronic cases and oral medications .

ASTHMA

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory condition in which bronchial tubes become hyper responsive ,narrow and produce excess mucus leading to difficulty in breathing .

Symptoms : 

  1. Recurrent episodes of breathlessness 
  2. Wheezing 
  3. Chest tightness
  4. Persistent cough 

In ayurveda , this condition is called tamaka swasa .Tamaka swasa is considered as swatantra vyadhi(independent disease ) as it has its own etiology, pathogenesis. This condition is treated with Virechana procedure and oral medications.

SINUSITIS

Sinusitis is the inflammation of mucous membrane that lines the sinuses which leads to obstruction of mucous drainage leading to various symptoms.

Symptoms:

  1. Nasal congestion 
  2. Thick nasal discharge 
  3. Fever 
  4. Heaviness in the head 
  5. Fatigue
  6. Facial pain 

Sinusitis can be correlated to Dushta pratishyaya,which is mainly due to vitiation of kapha dosha with involvement of vata dosha.Shodana therapies have shown drastic improvement in such cases which includes Nasya karma , swedana and vamana in severe conditions with oral medications to reduce the inflammation of mucosa and helps clear nasal congestion .

NASAL POLYPS

Nasal polyps are painless, benign growths that develop in the mucosa lining the nasal passages and sinuses  .

Symptoms:

  1. Nasal congestion 
  2. Reduced perception of smell
  3. Runny nose 
  4. Headache 
  5. Post nasal drip 

Nasal polyps can be correlated with nasa arshas, which are caused due to vitiation of kapha, vata. In ayurveda, shodana therapies like nasya karma with lekhana(scraping action)property medicines are indicated in such conditions.Pratisaraniya kshara(external alkaline application) has shown excellent results in this case where the alkaline material destroys the unhealthy tissue .
